The School Context
My final school experience was undertaken at Sunny (pseudonym) Primary School in a pre-primary classroom. According to the 'My School' website from Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA, 2014), Sunny Primary School is a K-7 Government school with a student population of 697. At present 7% of the students are Indigenous Australians and 43% of the student population is distributed in the lower quarter of the index of community socio-educational advantage index (rated at 959 on the scale). There were 30 students in the pre-primary class to which I was assigned; 17 girls and 14 boys. The daily routine in this Early Childhood Centre groups consists of students from 3 pre-primary classes into literacy ability levels together until recess time and then after recess the students return to their own classroom for the remainder of the day. The school is currently implementing the 'John Fleming' explicit teaching model as part of a school wide improvement plan. |
