I believe by using the content and processes of the Australian Curriculum and employing many techniques to teach it, I can engage and immerse the students in their learning. Where suitable I can use a cross curricula approach, I can plan and deliver differentiated lessons to the students using many teaching and learning strategies (such as explicit, co-operative, experiential, whole class and small group).
At this stage in my career I acknowledge the importance of extensive research and planning to ensure that my lessons are sequential and effective in providing content and processes to students that they can connect to and build on. I have completed First Steps training in teaching number (see standard 6) and have gone onto self explore other First Steps concepts in numeracy and also in literacy. I have recently started looking at how First Step resources link with the Australian Curriculum (click here to see example) to extend my knowledge and understanding in what students should know and be able to do (Catholic Education Services, UK).
Throughout my time at Murdoch University (commencing studies in 2009) I have explored the Australian Curriculum in most of the learning areas as they have been made public. In my workplace I have been in the fortunate position where the school Principal invites education assistants to attend all staff meetings. In addition to the professional developments listed in Standard 6, I have attended many in house and local network professional development and collaborative learning group sessions, extending my knowledge, understandings and skills in relation to implementing the Australian Curriculum.

2.5 Literacy and numeracy strategies. Know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching areas.
2.6 Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students.

Situation
Recently, through my university studies we were required to complete an action research project which focused on selecting an area of our teaching abilities that we felt needed improvement.
Action
I chose using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in student learning, specifically, using iPads in early childhood mathematical learning as I did not feel confident in using the technology effectively. Through this project I have been able to connect students to the curriculum content using ICT in engaging and differentiaited ways (differentiated curriculum example Number Lines App).
Outcome
Below is a quote from the website of me describing my learning.

In addition to my own learning of the mathematical content of the Australian Curriculum and the modes through which it can be taught, the staff of the early childhood centre in which the project took place decided to continue to use the program as they felt the students had benefited from being involved.

I found the action research process a valuable way of furthering my professional knowledge of the curriculum and the ways in which it can be taught.
